Vietnamese is extremely superstitious, so they have a lot of taboos, as well as unique customs. Below are some typical customs and taboos Hanoi Imperial Hotel would like to tell you to learn more about Vietnamese customs. Hope these are useful for traveler who comes to visit Vietnam:

1. It is polite to remove your shoes upon entering someone’s home, but not necessary upon entering someone's shop.

2. Please use both hands when ofering somthing to someone older or of higher status than you, it shows the respect.

3. The youngest person at the table serves everyone else, starting with the oldest or most important. Sometimes, if you're an important guest, people will choose the best parts of something and put it in your dish. It shows you're respected.

4. Please do not leave a good comment on a little baby, their parents may angry with you or feel unpleasant if you do not say “trom via” before leaving a good comment on babies.

5. Vietnamese women rarely drink alcohol or smoke. So, as a western women one needs to be careful when drinking or smoking in public, in case they get a bad impression of you. Some poeple don't mind, but you need to be aware of this as it might lower your status in their eyes.

6. Bargaining for ANYTHING is the way to go, unless you're in a supermarket or restaurant.

7. Vietnamese taboo is not taking photo in a group of 3, you can take photo of 1, 2 or more than 3 because Vietnamese people think that there will be unlucky if taking a shot of 3

8. Many students may avoid eye contact or speak quietly and passively. This is how they show respect to their teachers.

9. Vietnamese add the word "oi" after a name.

10. Asking personal questions such as "how much do you earn?" "how old are you", or "how much do you weigh?" are quite acceptable questions in Vietnamese culture. They don't mind share with you these personal information.
